A Nation Observed

Earlier in the year I set out to design a new pattern fit for the summer. I thought about making a companion to my 'Drifting Daisies' tapestry pattern but it didn't feel right. Several months later, shaped by rising tensions and an increasingly uncertain future, I arrived at 'A Nation Observed'. They say art imitates life and the role of the artist is to reflect what's going on, onto their work. And that's what this is. A challenge to decide: are you watching, or being watched? In a world of constant connection and quiet surveillance, the boundary between the two starts to blur.

Charts, Charts, Charts

If you’ve been keeping up, you’ve probably noticed my ongoing Zodiac Sign Chart releases on Pinterest. The collection has continued to grow and now includes several signs, with Cancer being the latest addition.

Each sign comes with two chart options: one designed to be simple and approachable for beginners, and another that leans more artistic, drawing inspiration from the symbolism of the sign itself.

As I get closer to the end of this series, I'm excited about what's to come. Let's just say this next one will be a new adventure into something already explored.

Ever looked around and thought, "I wish my [insert item or space] looked more personalized." In our modern world nearly everything comes in different colors, shapes and sizes. Even so, personal style is often missing from many spaces, especially our homes. It doesn't have to be that way though. I come across pins like this every so often, and each time I do, it's like breaking out of some creative spell. It reminds me that once you buy something, it's yours. So why should it have to remain untouched and in pristine condition?Paint the chair, dye the shirt, and decorate your space however you want.

I'll admit I was late to the Cricut machine craze. I had no idea what they actually did just that every crafter sung their praises. So when I got the chance to acquire one it was a slow start. For a while, it just sat in my craft room like a fancy paperweight. But now, I get it. Don't get me wrong, there are certainly some pitfalls and moments where it gives me a major headache. Even so, I think the good outweighs the bad. Tasks like cutting shapes and drawing text, which can be tedious to do by hand (especially in large quantities), are easier than ever. Because of that, I find myself feeling more confident tackling DIY projects instead of defaulting to store-bought alternatives.

Don't you hate when a new item gets stained or scuffed after the FIRST use? I was so excited to wear my Bombas Saturday slippers when the unthinkable happened... I spilled oil on them.Of course, I scrambled to get the stain out with all the usual solutions: stain remover, vinegar, baking soda, you name it. Unfortunately, little to nothing worked. I even tried color matching and painting over the stain, but that looked atrocious. At that point, I was defeated. Then I had a thought: "What if I put something over it?" At first, I considered adding a patch, but instead I decided to give paint another try. This time, rather than trying to match the original color, I created a design. An hour later, voilà. The stain was covered, and I had a cute custom design on my shoes. I'm glad I didn't give up, or worse, throw them out. Hopefully this inspires someone else to waste less and customize more.
